Scrub-a-Dub Pup (1927) – Poster

Scrub-a-Dub Pup (1927) poster

Description

This original promotional poster for Scrub-a-Dub Pup marks the first on-screen appearance of KOEUB, alongside CHIROL, in a short produced by Brian & Chirol Dog Studio. Notably, KOEUB’s skin tone in the artwork differs from later standardized depictions, suggesting the character’s visual design had not yet been finalized at the time of production.

Printed in bold, flat colors typical of late-1920s lithography, the composition captures a dynamic chase scene: CHIROL gleefully splashes through mud, while an exasperated KOEUB pursues him against a simple backyard setting. The clean outlines, limited color palette, and hand-lettered title reflect the economical yet striking design approach of the studio’s early marketing materials.

This surviving example is exceptionally well-preserved, with minimal fading and only light toning of the paper stock, offering a vivid glimpse into the formative years of the KOEUB character.
